Fundamental Rights in the Indian Constitution, Explained Simply

URS Education Editorial · 10 September 2026 · 6 min read

What the six categories of fundamental rights are and why they matter.

Part III of the Indian Constitution sets out the fundamental rights. They are commonly grouped into six categories: the right to equality, the right to freedom, the right against exploitation, the right to freedom of religion, cultural and educational rights, and the right to constitutional remedies.

The right to constitutional remedies allows citizens to approach the Supreme Court and High Courts directly when these rights are violated.

Fundamental rights are justiciable, which means courts can enforce them — a key difference from the Directive Principles of State Policy.
